Philosophy
In
general, the field of Psychology is divided into
three categories: Psychoanalytic, Behavioral, and
Humanistic.
Terry
Stout's orientation has always had its roots in the
Humanistic Psychology approach. His basic
philosophy, therefore, is one of addressing the
causes of issues, rather than medicating symptoms
or altering overt behaviors. Consequently, since he
does not believe in magic pills, his counseling
relationship with people requires responsibility on
their part and active participation in their own
healing process.
He
also believes that each person is complex and
unique, and therefore does not easily fit into the
box of a specific diagnostic criteria. As a result,
he meets each individual on the basis of exactly
who they are and what their specific needs
represent.
His
goal is to enter into a partnership with people
that will ultimately lead to their integration as a
balanced, whole, and fully functioning human
being.
Traditional
Counseling
For those interested in engaging in a traditional approach to psychotherapy, Terry operates from the foundational training of a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, with an orientation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Clinical
Hypnotherapy
Terry’s initial training in Hypnotherapy (and continuing education through the present) has been with the Hypnotherapy Training Institute in association with Ormund McGill, Randal Churchill, and Cheryl Cantfield. In more recent years he has also served in the capacity as part-time teacher of Level 5 students for the Institute.
Hypnotherapy is an integral part of what Terry offers in his private practice to facilitate deeper, more immediate, and lasting change. He has a unique skill for listening to a client's issues and desires during a session and turning that into a specific hypnosis script, tailored for the person. He can then offer this hypnosis to the client in MP3 or CD format, for their use at home. Hypnosis has been one of his most valued tools for over thirty-five years.
Holistic
Counseling
For
those with the self-awareness, consciousness, and
willingness to address their lives on deeper
levels, Holistic Counseling approaches aspects of
Being often left untouched by more traditional
methods and comes from the approach of Metaphysical
Science in Psychology.
Life-threatening
Issues
Receiving
a diagnosis or experiencing an event that brings
one face-to-face with their own mortality is
traumatic and life-altering on many levels. It may
also serve as a catalyst for tremendous growth and
healing in ways that were not previously
imagined.
Terry
spent more than twelve years working with people
who were life-threatened and their families and/or
support circles. He calls these people his greatest
teachers and brings the depth of that experience to
his work with others facing similar or other
issues. In recent years, he served for two years as
a Hospice chaplain.
Grief
Recovery
Throughout thirty-five-plus years of private practice, Terry has
discovered that every client he has worked with had
one thing in common -- unresolved grief.
Working
with people who had life-threatening issues (as
well as having a daughter die) gave Terry the
direct knowledge of the difference between grief
counseling and grief recovery.
Grief
counseling gives voice to unexpressed emotions and
feelings, which is necessary and helpful, but
incomplete. Grief Recovery provides understanding
of how the hurts of a lifetime (not just the death
of a loved one) inform us on a subconscious level,
and gives practical tools that can be used to
transform past, present, and future griefs and
bring completion to them. This work is so
transformative and important that Terry has
developed a passion for bringing it to all who are
open to it. Read
more about Grief Recovery
Terry has also found that couples who do the Grief Recovery work together often become closer and more understanding of each other's issues and triggers, once they know where they come from and how they continue to inform their behaviors and thoughts. This understanding is key to developing a more supportive relationship.
EMDR
Whenever an event occurs in a person’s life that is traumatic, painful, or wounding, it is stored in memory, and a message about that event is stored in the subconscious mind and in the body, particularly in the nervous system. If the information stored is incorrect or incomplete, it can be triggered inappropriately by a present event or concern over a future event. EMDR uses dual attention stimulation to unlock, unstick, or unfreeze the nervous system to allow the mind and body to reprocess that event and change one’s relationship to it, much like the way REM sleep helps process unconscious material.
EMDR is evidence-based and proven to be an effective, safe and life-saving treatment for PTSD and other trauma-related reactions, as opposed to pharmaceuticals, which only treat symptoms (rather than causes) and can possibly even precipitate suicide.

About
Terry Stout

Terry Stout
Terry
received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology
from San Francisco State University. After a tour
in the military as a Naval Aviator and the start of
an airline career, he returned to San Francisco
State to enter the Master of Science Program in
Counseling. His first year's internship was with
children K-12. His second was working with adults
who had life-threatening illnesses and their
families. He remained there for more than twelve
years, eventually supervising other interns. In the
meantime, he received his Master of Science in
Counseling and completed state requirements for
licensing as a Marriage Family Child Counselor,
which was subsequently converted to a Marriage and
Family Therapist license from the state of
Colorado.
In
conjunction with his masters program and MFCC
license, he was trained and certified as a
Hypnotherapist, which has been an integral part of
his private practice since its inception in 1985,
and has since become certified as a Clinical
Hypnotherapist. He also teaches part-time to
Level 5 Hypnotherapy students in training.
In
1992, he moved his practice to Colorado, where it
has remained.
In
1996, Terry earned a Doctor of Metaphysical Science
degree in Psychology, and an affiliation with the
Pastoral Psychology Association.
The
process of his daughter's death in 1999 served as
the catalyst for his certification in Grief
Recovery from the Grief Recovery Institute. In
addition, he recently served as a Hospice chaplain
for two years.
Subsequently, he added a tile to his mosaic of treatment modalities by receiving training as an EMDR practitioner in order to address the deeper and more causal aspects of trauma.

"Simply
put, Terry has changed my life. He's caring,
intelligent, dynamic and his own life experiences
have greatly contributed to his ability to
understand and relate to me. I was extremely
hesitant to go to their grief workshop, but found
peace and enlightenment. It was hard work, but very
much worth the time and effort. I feel better, I AM
better. He provides a safe and comfortable place to
guide you to a happier way of living. He's helping
me look at my life in a new way and I have never
found this in any other counselor."

"The
deep work of grief recovery that Terry Stout
facilitated with me, after the death of my husband,
saved my life. The integrity and depth of Terry's
commitment to such profound and tender work held
the light in the darkest times, giving me a
relationship I could count on, when there was
little else. Terry's skill and compassion for the
grief work one may be called upon to do is a unique
and a rare gift, forged in his own personal
relationship with grief and loss. Terry was as a
mid-wife in my own re-creation as I slowly opened
up to the many unresolved griefs accumulated over
my lifetime, my husband's death a remarkable
catalyst. Through my commitment to my own healing
fully matched by Terry's unwavering support,
sharing of tools and the patient encouragement to
face some of life's greatest challenges, I now can
choose to live life richly and with great
gratitude."

given him tools that he will be able to use
always."
